Walker carried down Thorpe Cloud after becoming unwell
Derby Mountain Rescue Team stretchered a man off the hill above the Dovedale stepping stones after he collapsed and was sick.

Derby Mountain Rescue Team was called out on Tuesday 29 September 2026 after a man collapsed and was sick while descending Thorpe Cloud, above the Dovedale stepping stones.
The team was called at the request of East Midlands Ambulance Service after reports that a male walker had become unwell on the hill. He had reached the summit before feeling dizzy and stopping to rest.
After resting he tried to continue downhill but became unwell again and could not carry on. A passing walker found him and stayed with him until rescuers arrived.
Team members assessed the man and decided that carrying him down was the safest option. The team said in a post on its website that he was "kept warm and secured onto our specialist mountain rescue stretcher" before being carried down the steep ground.
Once the ground levelled out at Thorpe Pasture, a wheel was fitted to the stretcher for the rest of the descent. The man was then handed over to an East Midlands Ambulance Service crew for further assessment.
Thorpe Cloud
Thorpe Cloud is an isolated limestone hill between the villages of Thorpe and Ilam, on the Derbyshire and Staffordshire border at the southern end of Dovedale. It is popular with day-trippers and gives views along the dale and across the Midland plain. (Wikipedia)
The team
Derby Mountain Rescue Team covers the Peak District and is staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers, on call throughout the year, according to its website. It recorded 93 call-outs in 2025, according to the Mountain Rescue England and Wales annual review. (Mountain Rescue England and Wales, Derby MRT)
Staying safe
Mountain rescue teams advise walkers who feel unwell or dizzy on a hill to stop, stay warm and seek help rather than continuing to descend alone.
