Privacy notice
This notice takes effect on 1 October 2026.
This notice explains what personal data The Camping Fire (thecampingfire.com) collects, why, and what you can do about it. The site is published by Coreter Limited, registered in England and Wales, company number 10006673, registered office 28 Paxton Cresent, Armthorpe, Doncaster, DN3 2AE. Coreter Limited is the controller of your data.
What we collect
If you just read the site, we do not ask for anything and we do not set any advertising or analytics cookies.
When you visit. Like most websites, our servers record each visit: your IP address, the page you asked for, the page that linked you to it, your browser type, and an approximate location (country and city) worked out from your IP address. We use these records only to keep the site secure and to understand how it is used.
If you sign up for the weekly email, we store:
- your email address
- where on the site you signed up (for example, at the end of an article) and the page you were on
- the wording you agreed to and the time you agreed to it
We use this only to send you the weekly email and to show that you asked for it.
If you email us, we keep your message and your email address so we can reply and, for tips and corrections, follow up the story.
On your own device, the site keeps a few small notes in your browser's storage so that the sign-up invitation does not keep reappearing after you close it or sign up, plus one cookie once you have signed up. None of them holds your name or email address. Our cookie notice lists each one and lets you turn the invitation off.
If you send us a story
When you use our Send us a story form, we collect:
- your name and email address
- what happened, where and when it happened, and any links you add
- up to five photos, with their location data removed before we store them
- a salted one-way hash of your IP address, used only to limit abuse of the form and never to identify you
We use this to check the story and to follow it up with you. The lawful basis is your consent, which you give with the tick box on the form, and you can withdraw it at any time.
Everything you send is kept in our database and private file storage with Supabase, in London (eu-west-2). Only our editors can see it. Our article-drafting tool can read the text of a story an editor chooses to work from, but never your name, email address or photos.
When an editor uses our AI drafting tool on something you have sent us, the text is sent to Anthropic, which processes it to write a draft for the editor to check. Under Anthropic's terms for business customers, it does not use this content to train its models, and it deletes it within 30 days, unless it must keep it longer to enforce its usage policy or to comply with the law.
If you tick the box confirming that you took the photos, or that the person who did has agreed, we may publish your photos with a credit.
To have a submission deleted, email privacy@thecampingfire.com and tell us roughly when you sent it and the email address you used.
Why we use it
- The weekly email: your consent, which you give when you sign up. You can withdraw it at any time with the unsubscribe link in any email, or by contacting us.
- Replying to you: our legitimate interest in answering messages and checking stories.
- Running and securing the site: our legitimate interest in keeping the site working and safe.
We do not sell your data, and we do not use it to profile you.
Who helps us handle it
- Cloudflare hosts the site and delivers every page. Our logging service runs on Cloudflare too, and writes the visit records described above to our database.
- Supabase runs our databases in its London region: one for sign-ups and story submissions, and one for visit records.
- Brevo will send the weekly email once we connect it. Until then, sign-ups are stored only in our own database. When Brevo is connected, your email address will be passed to Brevo so it can send the email, and we will update this notice.
If we ever add analytics or advertising, we will update this notice first, and anything that needs your permission will ask for it before it runs.
International transfers
Our databases and file storage are kept with Supabase in its London region. Cloudflare runs a global network, so your visit, and the visit record our logging service writes, may be handled at a Cloudflare data centre outside the UK. When an editor uses our AI drafting tool on something you have sent us, the text is processed by Anthropic, which stores data in the United States and may route requests to servers in the US, Europe, Asia and Australia. Where personal data leaves the UK, Cloudflare, Supabase and Anthropic protect it with the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses in their data processing terms.
How long we keep it
- Newsletter details: kept until you unsubscribe, then removed within 30 days.
- Story submissions, including photos: kept for 12 months, then deleted, unless we use them in a published story, in which case they are kept with that story's records.
- Emails to the editors: kept for up to two years.
- Visit records: 90 days, then deleted.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask to see the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, object to how we use it, or ask us to stop using it. To do any of these, email privacy@thecampingfire.com. We will reply within one month.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk. We would appreciate the chance to put it right first.
