Cookie notice
This notice takes effect on 1 October 2026.
Short version: reading The Camping Fire sets no cookies at all, and nothing on the site tracks you for advertising. The only cookie is set when you sign up for the weekly email.
Cookies we use
These are everything the site keeps in your browser. Each one either remembers a choice you made or stops us asking you twice in one visit; none records what you read, and none holds your name or email address.
| Name | Type | What it is for | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
tcf_nl | Cookie | Set when you sign up, so we never ask you again; it works without JavaScript | 2 years |
tcf:nl:signed_up | Local storage | Remembers on this device that you signed up | Until you clear your browser storage |
tcf:nl:dismissed_at | Local storage | Remembers that you chose "No thanks" on the weekly email invitation, so it stays away | 30 days |
tcf:nl:prompts_off | Local storage | Set only if you use "Reset and stop sign-up prompts" below | Until you clear your browser storage or turn it back on |
tcf:nl:shown | Session storage | Makes sure the invitation appears at most once per visit | Until you close the tab |
Turn the sign-up invitation off
You can forget everything the invitation remembers on this device and stop it appearing, or allow it again later.
Our editors also get a sign-in cookie when they log in to the editing tools. It is only ever set on those pages, and readers never receive it.
Videos. Where a story includes a YouTube video, nothing loads from YouTube until you press play. Once you do, YouTube may set its own cookies under its privacy policy.
If this changes
We do not use analytics or advertising cookies today. If we add visitor statistics (such as Google Analytics) or adverts (such as Google AdSense), we will update this notice before they go live, and any cookie that is not strictly necessary will wait for your permission first.
Managing cookies and storage
You can clear cookies and local storage, or block them, in your browser settings. Blocking them will not stop you reading anything on the site; the sign-up invitation may simply show up again.
