Walker rescued after being benighted above Lining Crag
The 26-year-old had no adequate torch and could not continue on the Coast to Coast path in the Lake District.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team rescued a 26-year-old man who became benighted on the Coast to Coast path above Lining Crag in the Lake District on Wednesday 4 November 2026.
The man asked for help after darkness fell while he was on the path above Lining Crag, near Stonethwaite. The team said he did not have an adequate torch and was unable to continue.
Three team members went to find him and brought him down to Stonethwaite. The callout was recorded by the team as beginning at 6.18pm.
"Without an adequate torch he was unable to continue," the team said in a post on its website. Four team members were involved in total, with the operation lasting three hours and 17 minutes.
Lining Crag and Ullscarf
Lining Crag sits on the approach to Ullscarf, a fell near the geographical centre of the Lake District's hills. Ullscarf forms part of the watershed ridge between the Derwentwater and Thirlmere catchments, running broadly north to south. (Wikipedia)
Keswick Mountain Rescue Team
Keswick MRT covers a wide area of the north Lakes, including Skiddaw, Helvellyn and Great End, according to its website. It says it will also operate more widely across the Lake District for larger search operations.
The team recorded 138 call-outs in 2025, according to the Mountain Rescue England and Wales Annual Review 2026. (Keswick MRT, Mountain Rescue England and Wales)
Staying safe
Mountain Rescue England and Wales advises anyone in difficulty in the hills to dial 999 or 112 and ask for the police, then mountain rescue. It recommends fully charging a mobile phone before setting out, keeping calls brief to conserve battery, and registering with emergencySMS in case of poor signal.
Anyone caught out should give their location and details of the incident, then stay put until contacted by the rescue team. (mountain.rescue.org.uk)
