In a daring rescue operation on 8th March 2024, the Edale Mountain Rescue Team (EMRT) was called into action to assist a climber who had suffered a significant fall at Millstone Edge, a popular climbing spot in the Peak District.
The incident, which occurred in the late hours of the day, saw the climber plummet approximately 10 meters, necessitating urgent medical attention.
Responding to a request from Derbyshire Police, the EMRT swiftly mobilised to the climber’s location.
Upon arrival, the team provided immediate pain relief to the injured climber, carefully immobilising him to prevent further injury.
The rescue operation then saw the climber being stretchered to a waiting helicopter, operated by the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance (LNAACT), strategically positioned above the crag for rapid evacuation.
The helicopter transported the climber to the Northern General Hospital’s trauma unit in Sheffield, where he is currently receiving specialised care for his injuries.
The quick response and coordinated effort between the EMRT, Derbyshire Police, and the air ambulance service were crucial in ensuring the climber’s swift transfer to the hospital, highlighting the importance of collaboration in emergency rescue operations.
The Edale Mountain Rescue Team has extended their best wishes to the climber for a full and speedy recovery.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with climbing and the vital role that mountain rescue teams and emergency services play in safeguarding the well-being of outdoor enthusiasts.
The EMRT remains committed to providing life-saving assistance in the Peak District, ready to respond to those in need, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
