In a somber incident last weekend, the Lake District paragliding community mourns the loss of one of its members following a tragic crash.
Keswick Mountain Rescue Team reported that the accident occurred near Foule Crag on Blencathra on Sunday, drawing immediate concern from several walkers who witnessed the crash and promptly alerted the authorities.
The rescue operation was launched around 2 pm, with the Great North Air Ambulance and a Coastguard helicopter swiftly deploying rescue team members close to the crash site.
Additionally, the RAF Mountain Rescue Service, which happened to be training in the vicinity, responded to the emergency.
Despite the rapid response and the efforts of a doctor and a Keswick team member who were lowered to the paraglider pilot’s location, the man’s life could not be saved.
The Keswick Mountain Rescue Team expressed their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, noting that he was a well-known figure within the local paragliding community and a friend to several team members.
This tragic event has cast a shadow over the paragliding community in the Lakes, reminding enthusiasts of the inherent risks associated with the sport.
The community and rescue teams are united in grief, remembering the pilot not only for his passion for paragliding but also for the friendships he forged among those who share his love for the skies.
