On Saturday, May 6th, 2023, the Kinder Mountain Rescue Team received a call for assistance from the East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) regarding an unresponsive young man who had collapsed at Kinder Downfall. The team immediately sprang into action, rushing to the scene to provide emergency aid to the hiker.
Upon arriving at the scene, the team found the young man at Swine’s Back near Edale Cross, where his group of friends had moved him to. Due to his significantly reduced level of consciousness and compromised airway, the team requested assistance from an air ambulance. However, the initial response from Helimed 29 had to be aborted due to poor weather conditions.
Undeterred, the team continued to provide emergency aid to the hiker and his group of friends, working tirelessly to stabilise him and ensure his safety. Eventually, Helimed 54 was able to attend and assist the team in transporting the hiker to a nearby ambulance.
In addition to escorting the EMAS crew up to Edale Cross in their Land Rover, the team also helped to escort the hiker’s friends down the mountain and to the team’s base in Hayfield. This rescue mission lasted for over five hours and required the efforts of 25 team members, totalling 125 volunteer hours.
Neil Woodhead, the team leader, expressed his gratitude to his team members for their tireless efforts, stating, “Our team is incredibly proud of the work we do, and we’re committed to providing the highest level of care to those in need. This was a challenging rescue mission, but our team rose to the occasion and worked together seamlessly to ensure that the hiker received the care he needed.”
