A solo fellrunner with a suspected fractured ankle was rescued from Shipman Knott on Monday 5 October 2026 after Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team was called to assist Kendal Mountain Rescue Team.

Langdale Ambleside MRT said it was asked to help Kendal MRT evacuate the runner, who had been fellrunning alone when the injury happened.

The team described the call-out as "a turning of the tables", noting it is usually Kendal MRT that assists Langdale Ambleside on its own patch.

Four team members took part in the operation, which lasted two hours, according to the post.

The team

Langdale Ambleside MRT is based in the Lake District and is available 365 days a year in all weather, according to its website. It describes itself as a self-funding team of volunteers who respond to over 100 incidents a year.

The team recorded 151 call-outs in 2025, according to the Mountain Rescue England and Wales Annual Review 2026. Its website states it has had 130 rescues so far this year, carried out by 45 volunteers. (Mountain Rescue England and Wales, Langdale Ambleside MRT)

Staying safe

Mountain Rescue England and Wales advises anyone in difficulty in the hills to dial 999 or 112 and ask for the police, then mountain rescue. It recommends noting key details beforehand, including location, name, age and nature of any injuries, and staying in place once a call has been made until a rescue team makes contact.

It also advises keeping phones charged and registering with emergencySMS before setting out, since mobile signal in the hills can be unreliable. (mountain.rescue.org.uk)
