In a critical operation on Saturday, 16th March 2024, at 14:18 hrs, the Edale Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) was dispatched to Stanage Edge in the Peak District following a distressing incident where a climber suffered a significant fall.
The accident occurred around the Flying Buttress area, a popular climbing spot known for its challenging routes.
The climber, who had taken a 10-meter tumble, initially reported back and head injuries, prompting immediate action from the rescue team.
At the time of the call, several team members were providing safety cover for the Grindleford Gallop, a local event, demonstrating the team’s commitment to community safety.
These members were the first responders to the scene, quickly performing a primary survey of the climber’s condition.
As additional team members arrived, a thorough assessment revealed that the climber’s injuries were isolated to the lower back, with moderate pain levels reported.
Fortunately, the climber’s decision to wear a helmet mitigated head injuries, underscoring the importance of safety gear in climbing.
The rescue operation involved treating the climber on-site and securing him into a full-body splint, using a vacuum mattress to ensure his stability.
The injured climber was then carefully placed on a mountain rescue stretcher for transportation back to the car park.
There, he was handed over to the East Midlands Ambulance crew, who transported him to Sheffield Northern General Hospital for further assessment and treatment.
