Oldham Mountain Rescue Team Assists Family in Dovestones

The Oldham Mountain Rescue Team (OMRT) was called upon on Wednesday afternoon to assist a family who were reportedly stuck at a waterfall in the Dovestones area. The Greater Manchester Police alerted the team, and after speaking to the operator, it was determined that the family was likely to be at Birchen Clough.

The team quickly deployed vehicles in that direction, and as the first vehicle arrived at Birchen weir, they were flagged down by the family. It turned out that the family had managed to self-rescue with the help of a passerby. The OMRT personnel checked them over and dropped them off at the main car park with their car.

Reflecting on the incident, OMRT team leader, Steve Penny, said, “We’re always glad to help when we’re needed, but it’s good to see that in this case, the family was able to self-rescue. It’s important to remember that the outdoors can be unpredictable, and it’s always a good idea to be prepared when exploring the hills.”

The OMRT, made up of volunteers, responds to emergencies in the Greater Manchester area and beyond, providing assistance and support to those in need. The team is made up of highly skilled and experienced individuals who undergo rigorous training to prepare them for any situation they may encounter.

“We take pride in our ability to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies in the outdoors, and our team members are always on standby, ready to help,” Penny added. “We urge anyone who is planning an adventure in the hills to be prepared, to check the weather forecast, and to carry the appropriate equipment.”

The OMRT is just one of many mountain rescue teams in the UK that provide vital support to those exploring the great outdoors. Their dedication and selflessness in helping others is a testament to the spirit of community and care that exists in these areas.

In conclusion, the OMRT’s response to the family stuck at Birchen Clough is a reminder of the importance of being prepared when exploring the outdoors. It is always better to be safe than sorry, and the presence of organisations like the OMRT can provide much-needed support and assistance in times of need.
